THE NEED

Long-term exposure to formaldehyde can cause significant respiratory problems and may cause CANCER in children and adults.

Building materials, furniture, carpets, and other decorative materials often contain high concentrations of formaldehyde that can be off-gassed for many years, and may cause long-term health problems.

Public health agencies internationally are warning residents about the dangers of breathing formaldehyde in indoor air. Organizations that have recommended health standards for exposure to formaldehyde include:

THE SOLUTION

While formaldehyde exists in almost all homes, it can be controlled to safe levels by detection, monitoring and removal. Just as we limit exposure to sunshine and most household chemicals to avoid health problems, we also can limit exposure to formaldehyde while still utilizing it for beneficial purposes.

The generally acceptable safe level is no more than 0.1 mg/m3 [0.08 parts per million (ppm)] where people can be expected to engage in normal activities.
